Abstract

These remarks were delivered by World Bank Group President David Malpass at the Virtual COVID-19 Global Action Plan Foreign Ministerial Meeting on July 19, 2022. He said that Coronavirus (COVID-19) has highlighted the pressing need for action to build stronger health systems and mobilize additional resources for Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response or PPR. He mentioned that when COVID-19 struck, it required immediate support for developing countries, and the World Bank Group mounted the fastest and largest response in our history with operations in over 100 countries. He declared that the World Bank Group is working closely with the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership to support focus countries to achieve their coverage goals. He said that they have worked closely with the WHO, IMF, and WTO throughout the pandemic. He also added that they have also worked with other development partners, including USAID and JICA, to strengthen the laboratory capacity of regional entities, such as the Africa CDC. He mentioned that the World Bank Group is proceeding quickly to establish a financial intermediary fund or FIF to mobilize additional resources for PPR and complement efforts to strengthen health systems in developing countries and regions. He concluded by saying that they look forward to more countries joining this partnership, to strengthening health systems further, and to working together on this critical agenda, including at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in August in Tunisia.

Abstract

Over the last two decades, Tanzania has registered improvement in the health status of the population and a reduction in the overall disease burden. However, the burden of communicable diseases and maternal and child health conditions, including nutrition, remains persistently high. These conditions can be prevented and treated with existing affordable and cost-effective interventions but remain major public health problems. Besides the persistently high burden of communicable diseases, Tanzania is witnessing a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and is at risk of a protracted, full-fledged double burden of disease. The study assessed the current and future trajectory of the disease burden, assessed the organization and performance of the health care delivery system in responding to the disease burden, and identified actions that Tanzania would need to employ to address the major causes of disease burden so that they may cease to be major public health problems.

Abstract

This report explores the main reasons behind the unreliable supply of Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) in health-care systems and policy options to address the issue. Tc-99m is used in 85% of nuclear medicine diagnostic scans performed worldwide - around 30 million patient examinations every year. These scans allow diagnoses of diseases in many parts of the human body, including the skeleton, heart and circulatory system, and the brain. Medical isotopes are subject to radioactive decay and have to be delivered just-in-time through a complex supply chain. However, ageing production facilities and a lack.

Abstract

With a view to assisting the evaluation of integrated approaches to testing and assessment (IATA) in regulatory decision-making within OECD Member Countries, this guidance document provides guidance on the reporting of defined approaches to testing and assessment in the area of skin sensitisation using the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) as a conceptual framework. Annex 1 (page 25) outlines twelve illustrative case studies for skin sensitisation and Annex 2 (page 279) lists information sources used within the case studies.

Abstract

The United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals are comprehensive and holistic in nature, encompassing 17 goals and 169 targets covering economic, social, and environmental dimensions of development. Countries face the challenge of translating the Sustainable Development Goals into feasible and realistic development plans. This paper provides a simple analytical framework to assist countries in prioritizing across competing Sustainable Development Goals and evaluating data availability to monitor them. The paper offers an analysis of potential financial resources that can be used to finance the investments needed to implement the 2030 Agenda. It uses cross-country regressions of the Sustainable Development Goals to benchmark a country's current outcomes against those of other countries, given levels of gross national income per capita, and projects its levels in 2030 if a statistically significant relationship exists with gross national income per capita. The paper applies the framework to the Arab Republic of Egypt and as such, summarizes Egypt's progress on the Sustainable Development Goals since 2000 and projects expected values for the attainment of future targets by 2030; (b) provides an assessment of Egypt's current capacity to produce the data needed to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals, and (c) assesses options for increasing financing for development. Finally, the paper compares Egypt's economic condition and trends with those of its peers, the Republic Korea and Poland.

Abstract

Before 1980, rates were generally well below 10%. They have since doubled or tripled in many countries, and in almost half of the OECD, 50% or more of the population is overweight.  A key risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, obesity is a major public health concern.    This book contributes to evidence-based policy making by exploring multiple dimensions of the obesity problem. It examines the scale and characteristics of the epidemic, the respective roles and influence of market forces and governments, and the impact of interventions. It outlines an economic approach to the prevention of chronic diseases that provides novel insights relative to a more traditional public health approach.  The analysis was undertaken by the OECD, partly in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The main chapters are complemented by special contributions from health and obesity experts, including Marc Suhrcke, Tim Lobstein, Donald Kenkel and Francesco Branca.  “a valuable set of results and suggestions about the best preventive interventions to reduce the burden of obesity.”   – Julio Frenk, Dean, Harvard School of Public Health   “The positive message of this book is that the obesity epidemic can be successfully addressed.”   – Ala Alwan, Assistant Director-General, World Health Organization   “innovative and well-researched”  – Martin McKee, Professor, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine "A timely, valuable volume on a critical issue.  Highly recommended."-Choice, July 2011

Abstract

This report presents the results of a survey of over 800 genetic testing laboratory directors in 18 OECD countries. It provides the first detailed overview of the availability and extent of molecular genetic testing across OECD member countries. The survey allowed the OECD to compare practices in individual countries in order to inform international action in setting standards and developing guidelines for practice. Based on the survey results, the report puts forward recommendations for action for better quality assurance and proficiency of molecular genetic testing. It shows, for example, that requirements for licensing and accreditation/certification of diagnostic molecular genetic testing laboratories have not penetrated OECD countries to a high degree or with any consistency. Considerable variations exist in mechanisms of licensing, certification and accreditation, including the standards by which tests are performed, results are reported, and the qualifications for laboratory personnel.
